Scholarly and semi-popular journal publications are the lifeblood of the Ancient Near East research community, providing a variety of articles that can include preliminary excavation reports, detailed specialist studies, discussions, book reviews and community announcements. These allow both scholars and laypeople alike to plug into the history, archaeology, language and religion of the ancient Near East and Egypt.

Established in 1884 by William Rainey Harper, JNES remains the only periodical in the USA devoted exclusively to an examination of the ancient and medieval civilizations of the Near East. Appearing in its pages are contributions from scholars of international reputation on archaeology, art, history, literature, linguistics, religion, law, and science. Old Testament and Islamic studies are also featured.

Their primary method of dissemination, however, remains in hard copy printed formats for the meantime.
