Ancient and Asian Art
Although relatively small in size, the Hood Museum’s holdings of Ancient art include some of the most significant works in the Dartmouth College collection. Among these are an extraordinary set of six limestone reliefs, acquired in 1854, from the palace of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BCE) and a group of Early Christian floor mosaics from Homs, in Syria.

Gregorian Egyptian Museum – includes Assyrian reliefs
Pope Gregory XVI founded this branch of the Vatican Museum in 1839. It houses ancient Egyptian monuments and artefacts, partly from Rome and the Villa Adriana (Tivoli) – from where they had been transferred mostly in the Imperial age – and partly from private collections (purchased by 19th century collectors). The Museum occupies 9 rooms divided by a large hemicycle that opens towards the terrace of the “Niche of the Fir Cone”, in which there are numerous sculptures. The last two rooms house finds from ancient Mesopotamia and from Syria-Palestine.
